Beukeboom named Cornish Pirates captain

Brett Beukeboom has been named club captain of the Cornish Pirates for the 2018-19 RFU Championship season. The Canadian lock, who turns 28 next week, is in his fourth season with the Penzance club after joining from Plymouth Albion ahead of the 2015-16 season. To date he has made 58 appearances across all competitions and is believed to have one year remaining on his current deal.

The captaincy role is not entirely new to Beukeboom, he led the club on occasion during the past season. A veteran of 32 internationals, he has also captained his country most notably during the 2017 June test series and World Cup qualifiers against the USA.

The Pirates finished 4th on the table in the 2017-18 season, their best finish since back-to-back seasons as finalists in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Headlining the Championship this season are London Irish, newly relegated from the Premiership, and last season’s runners-up Ealing Trailfinders.

Bolstering the Pirates squad this year are Saracens academy lock Danny Cutmore and towering Georgian international Nodar Cheishvili, while Pumas dual-international Javier Rojas joins the backline along with Ireland age-grade rep Rory Parata and former Waikato midfielder Jordan Payne. Canadian fullback Matt Evans remains at the club after signing a new one-year deal in April.
