South America Advancing Plans for 2020 Competitions

Sudamérica Rugby intends on using the Estadio Charrúa as a hub this year, writes Ignacio Chans for El Observador. The South American regional governing body is advancing plans for 2020 competitions for Men’s, Women’s and u20’s activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic means all rugby is presently suspended. The outlook is not great, although the authorities are working hard. In seeking to overcome the odds, plans are for Montevideo to be the base for a series of competitions over a period from July to October.

Due to the severity of the situation, any competition that would be confirmed will be played in a controlled environment behind closed doors. The Estadio Charrúa is thereby the ideal choice of a venue due to the Uruguay having low COVID-19 numbers, the cost-cutting that it would entail, and because it is the region’s premier facility.

Planning at this stage sees the 2020 South American Championship, aka the Sudamérica 6 Naciones A, being penciled down for July and August. Plans are for this to involve Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, the Uruguay XV, and the Argentina XV.

The 2020 u20’s are being positioned to take place in August and September. Chans notes that the plans are for Argentina to field two teams in what would be a new-look 6 Nations event with Argentina (2), Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay as the competitors.

Women’s competition is marked down for October. It is unclear as to which countries would be involved though potentially this would mean a Six Nations competition similar to the men’s. If so then it would contain Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Prior tournaments have been varied in terms of participation.
