Guzmán Barreiro Names strong Uruguay Roster to face Spain, Zimbabwe and Portugal

The recently appointment Guzmán Barreiro has named a strong Uruguayan roster for upcoming international duty. Los Teros will face Spain, Zimbabwe and Portugal in Europe in November as part of the 2026 World Rugby Nations Cup.

The three match tour will be Barreiro’s second assignment after he became head coach. He took over ahead of the 2026 Americas Rugby Championship (ARC). His tour to Europe is the tour to tick boxes less than a year out from Rugby World Cup 2027. Uruguay will face Ireland, Portugal, and Scotland in Australia 2027.

BOLSTERED ROSTER

When compared to the Uruguayan roster from July, the November selection is stronger. It has been bolstered by the inclusion of hooker Germán Kessler, and tight head prop Ignacio Péculo who missed out on July selection due to injuries. Fellow front-rowers Guillermo Pujadas and Francisco Suárez remain sidelined with long term injuries.

The other notable returnee is Manuel Leindekar. The second-rower took over from Andrés Vilaseca as captain only to be rested for July this year as part of an arrangement with his new club in France, Grenoble.

MISSING PLAYERS

The roster does not come without players missing from selection. In addition to the aforementioned Francisco Suárez, Santiago Cagnone is a second loose head prop not selected. He plays his rugby for Benfica a Agronomía in Portugal but is uncapped.

At hooker, Joaquín Myszka misses out after suspension following the gruesome late tackle that caused a year out of rugby for Chile’s Emilio Shea. There is no place for Máximo Lamelas who debuted for Uruguay against Hong Kong in July.

Only two tight head props made the cut. This sees a low total of just seven front-rowers. Diego Arbelo remains out of favor. Meanwhile, Lucas Porcelli, who debuted for Uruguay in July has not been selected by Barreiro.

Back-rowers Santiago Civetta and Carlos Deus are notably missing from the roster. Both were regulars over a sustained period and had busy campaigns for Uruguay at Rugby World Cup 2023. Rookie Arturo Ten Hoever misses out after debuting against Georgia in July.

The world-class Santiago Arata is missing. Uruguay’s most famous player is not involved but will be free for Uruguay for busy involvement before and during Rugby World Cup 2027. Fellow scrum-half, Santiago Álvarez has also not been included. He has been the regular starter in place of Arata this RWC cycle.

include Manuel Leindekar, Santiago Arata, Santiago Civetta, Carlos Deus, Felipe Etcheverry, Santiago Álvarez, Bautista Basso, Baltazar Amaya and Andrés Vilaseca.

Veteran fly half Felipe Etcheverry is not on the roster nor is Juan Zuccarino or Francisco Landauer. Etcheverry was the starting fly half for a number of years while Zuccarino had been his understudy for Peñarol before injury. Landauer made his debut last November against Romania.

Center Franco Scaldaferri debuted for Uruguay against Hong Kong in July but misses out on November selection. He was one of many new players selected under Rodolfo Ambrosio. Fullback Francisco González Capdevila is another example. He misses out and there is no place for Bautista Basso, and Baltazar Amaya who were starting outside backs last World Cup.
