The Unión de Rugby del Uruguay (URU) has decided to terminate the tenure of Los Teros coaches Rodolfo Ambrosio and Juan Figallo. The URU confirmed that the two Argentines are no longer coaching the National Men’s team.
In a publication, the URU thanked Ambrosio and Figallo for the time, effort, and dedication they demonstrated. Ambrosio was appointed Head Coach in 2024 and Figallo was later added to his coaching staff.
The decision comes a little over a year out from Rugby World Cup 2027. There URU has determined that they are unsatisfied with the direction of Los Teros. The removal of Ambrosio as Head Coach comes on the back of an embarrassing home defeat against Hong Kong last month in Montevideo.
Uruguay’s home World Rugby Nations Cup performances were underwhelming but came with a depleted player roster. Both the URU and Ambrosio were looking for an expanded player base but the team lost against Georgia, drew against Romania and was beaten by Hong Kong.
The URU conducted a review process that involved the entire Uruguayan national rugby community. They decided that a new strategic plan will be put into place. Uruguayan Rugby expert, Ignacio Chans notes that the idea is the new coaching staff will take-over ahead of the upcoming Americas Rugby Championship and that the staff will be 100% Uruguayan.
The 2026 Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) will take place in Chile from August 29 to September 6, 2026. Following the late withdrawals of Brazil and the USA Falcons XV due to scheduling and financial conflicts, Sudamérica Rugby altered the tournament to a four-team, straight round-robin format. The participating teams are Argentina XV, Chile XV, Uruguay XV, and Paraguay (who will field their full test side).
Uruguay will travel to Europe in November for the final three rounds of the World Rugby Nations Cup. Los Teros will play test matches against Zimbabwe (November 07), Spain (November 14) and Portugal (November 21).
