Tarucas Shake-Up Super Rugby Americas with Upset Away Win over Peñarol

Super Rugby Americas 2025 has been shaken up. Los Tarucas celebrated an away victory over two-time former champions Peñarol in Montevideo, Uruguay on Friday. The 35-28 win saw Los Tucumanos wining the battle up front and causing Peñarol havoc with yellow cards being a theme of the contest.

MATCH NOTES
  • Early pressure saw raids from Peñarol and Felipe Aliaga scoring.
  • Los Tarucas hit-backs with two penalty tries for a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Mariano García Ascarate extended the lead with an interception try from an off-target Felipe Etcehverry kick.
  • Hooker Sebastian Pérez scored tries either side of half-time for Peñarol to level the scoreline at 21-21.
  • Tarucas fullback Stefano Ferro combined with Molinuevo to slice through late in the third quarter.
  • Possible rookie Puma Simón Benítez Cruz scored with an excellent support line before Peñarol captain Manuel Diana hit-back with 10 minutes remaining.
  • Replacement Nicolás Roger missed a penalty to put the result beyond doubt. Peñarol then went in search for a try from deep in their own territory. They gained good ground before knocking-on for full-time to be called.
  • The win sees Los Tarucas closing-in on Yacare and Selknam. As it stands the three teams are competing for 4th position in SRA.
  • Peñarol’s 2 bonus points sees the Uruguayan team temporarily level with Los Pampas on 29 points. The Buenos Aires side can return to top on Saturday by beating Os Cobras in São Paulo.
  • Friday’s other result saw Los Dogos securing a bonus point win to move to 30 points for 1st place for now.
