MLR confirms Carolina team with revised schedule

Major League Rugby, in concert with USA Rugby and World Rugby, have confirmed a joint agreement to create a professional team primarily geared towards the development of US-eligible talent. As first reported on Americas Rugby News, the team will be based in Charlotte. Its name, however, has been altered from the working title of Charlotte Hawks to Anthem Rugby Carolina.

Built on the USA Hawks program that was based in Charlotte last year, the new outfit will play at American Legion Memorial Stadium. It’s a 10,500 seat facility that was completely rebuilt and re-opened in 2021 and features a FIFA-certified BrockFILL artificial turf surface. The Charlotte Independent men’s USL soccer team with the Carolina Chaos women’s side to begin play later this year.

A fully revised schedule has also been released, with Anthem set to make their MLR debut on opening weekend against the defending champion New England Free Jacks. Also confirmed is the return to the East-West conference format used in 2023. Further details such as management and coaching structure, and the inaugural playing roster, are yet to be revealed.
