Canada names rosters for Olympic 7s Qualifiers

Rugby Canada has named their Women’s and Men’s sides for the Rugby Americas North 7s hosted at Starlight Stadium this coming weekend. This year’s tournament doubles as an Olympic Qualifier, with the winner of each draw booking their ticket to Paris 2024.

The Women’s side features an array of talent including several senior XVs stars, most notably Pacific Four captain Sophie de Goede. Vice-captain Justine Pelletier has also been called up while Asia Hogan-Rochester returns from long-term injury. Olivia Apps will lead the team in Langford.

Captaining the Men’s team is Phil Berna, who will be supported by a familiar cast that retained their core status on the World Sevens Series. Cooper Coats makes a notable return from injury to bolster the side with Josiah Morra making it three returnees from the previous successful Olympic qualifier.

It will be a round-robin format for the Women, with Bermuda, Jamaica, Mexico, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines also competing. The Men will compete in Pool B with Bermuda and St. Lucia prior to the knock-outs, with the top-ranked USA in Pool A. Teams who finish 2nd and 3rd in the Men’s draw will move on to the final Repechage tournament next June.
