South America’s qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics are just around the corner. Taking place on Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 in Montevideo, Uruguay, seven Women’s teams and six Men’s teams will compete for places at the Olympics.
The qualifying competitions follows the completion of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Argentina’s Men’s 7’s finished second in the world and has qualified directly for the 2014 Paris Olympics.
There will be Men’s and Women’s slots up for grabs in Montevideo. The Women’s competitors include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. The Men’s competition will not include Argentina.
The teams will compete for a place at the Paris Olympics. The winner will qualify while the second and third place finishes will have an additional opportunity to qualify via repechage.
The competition in Montevideo will feature 21 Women’s matches. The teams will compete in round-robin format to determine who will advance for a shot at the Olympics. It will be based on round-robin results. The Men’s will be different. There will be 15 Men’s fixtures followed by finals.
The Paris Olympics will be the third time that rugby has featured since returning as an Olympic Sport. Argentina and Brazil competed as South America’s Men’s teams at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil and Colombia were the Women’s competitors.
Argentina won Bronze at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympic Games. With two men down Argentina overcame South Africa before defeating Great Britain 17-12 to win Bronze Medals.
