Pampas win War of Attrition against Yacare with Time Up

It was a war of attrition in Buenos Aires. Los Pampas came-from-behind to win the match 25-24 with time up. The result means that there will be an all-Argentine Semi Final with Los Pampas playing away to Los Dogos in Córdoba. Meanwhile, Yacare will travel to Montevideo to face Peñarol.

A rare daytime match at the Club Atlético de San Isidro (CASI) saw the home team finish the regular season in third position. Los Pampas did so with a rotated line-up. There were opportunities for the likes of fly half Joaquín Lamas, winger Tomás Passaro and Pumas scrum-half Eliseo Morales slotted-in at fullback.

Many players in the match have represented Argentina. It was Argentina XV second-rower Rodrigo Fernández Criado who was the hero. Fernádenz Criado scored a try with time up. Joaquín Lamas then added the conversion for the win.

Getting there was a true war of attrition. The match featured a total of four tries. Yacare scored the first three. N8 Juan Cruz Pérez Rachel continued his excellent season with a double. The Pumita scored tries in the 17th and 28th minutes. Captain Ignacio Inchauspe converted the first.

Inchauspe had 2/4 goal-kicking performance for the match. His counterpart, Joaquín Lamas kicked all his goals. His 7/7 performance was vital. He landed an early penalty and then slotted three late in the half. This brought the teams level at 12-12 at half-time.

Another factor in Los Pampas’ favor was discipline. Juan Cruz Pérez Rachel was yellow carded on the stroke of half-time and winger Tomás Acosta Pimentel was yellow carded late in the third quarter.

Acosta Pimentel returned to score a late try. The try put Yacare 24-18 ahead. Prior to the try the only second half points were two Lamas penalties. His accuracy and Fernández Criado being able to burst over turned the game on its head as La Catedral erupted.

Los Pampas and Yacare may yet clash again this season. In order for this to happen they both need to win their Semi Finals.
