Argentina repeat as Men’s Champions in Vancouver

Argentina are again the Men’s Champions of the Vancouver Sevens. Los Pumas conquered France in the Cup Final to equal their success at last year’s tournament. It’s their second Cup Final victory in four events and put them in a very strong position for automatic Olympic qualification with four stops remaining on this year’s circuit.

Tries from captain Matías Osadczuk and Rodrigo Isgro just a minute apart gave the Pumas a 14-7 win over Ireland in the Semi Final. Isgro would be named Player of the Final as one of five players to score in an impressive showing against Les Bleus.

The Men’s Eagles started their day with a dramatic win over Fiji. A comedy of errors allowed Iowane Teba to tie the game at full-time, but Perry Baker saved the victory in the sudden-death period. New Zealand were up next in the 5th place Final and once again proved well ahead of the USA, matching the eight-try performance of the pool stage.

Chile, Canada, and Uruguay would all bow out after just one game on Day Three. The Cóndores were shut out by Japan, and the Canadians lost decisively to South Africa in the 13th place Semi Finals. Uruguay was overrun by Samoa in the 9th place Semi Final.

With seven tournaments played and four to go, Argentina are the top side from the Americas at No2 overall. The USA have fallen to 9th spot, with Uruguay in 11th. Canada are in 14th place, with Japan the only core side below them. The Series continues in Hong Kong at the end of the month.
