Peñarol confirm roster with Uruguay in World Cup mode

Peñarol’s roster has been confirmed for Super Rugby Americas 2023. The team is entirely Uruguayan with every player being homegrown. This differs to prior seasons; Peñarol had Argentines in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) and players from countries including Colombia, Portugal and South Africa in SLAR 2020.

The roster naming came without a captain. There is good reason for this as Andrés Vilaseca plays for Vannes and Santiago Civetta is out for the season following a serious injury. The former captained the side to glory in SLAR 2022.

Peñarol continue to have a notable roster of players. There are veterans such as loose head Mateo Sanguinetti (77 caps), fullback Rodrigo Silva (76 caps) and winger Gastón Mieres 80 caps. The trio all previously played Major League Rugby (MLR) with Sanguinetti all playing in France and Mieres in England and Italy.

The roster also contains players who are back in Uruguay from abroad. Juan Manuel Alonso has returned after time with Brive in France, Juan Manuel Rodríguez is back from Italy, Ignacio Dotti is back from NOLA Gold and Juan Andrés Zuccarino is home after playing SLAR 2022 for Selknam.

Meanwhile, the roster also sees players back from injury. Three instances are Diego Arbelo, Felipe Aliaga, and Juan Manuel Tafernberry. All three men missed out on international duty in 2022 due to injury. Arbelo is Uruguay’s first choice tight head prop.

Super Rugby Americas 2023 kicks-off on February 18. Peñarol have a bye in the opening round. The Uruguayans will begin their campaign at home at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo against the American Raptors on February 24. Uruguayans Juan Echeverría and Diego Magno now play for the Raptors.
