Two Big Names return to Peñarol for Super Rugby Americas from MLR

Two big names are returning to Uruguay for Super Rugby Americas 2023. Ignacio Dotti and Gastón Mieres will boost the Peñarol roster for the upcoming season. They are back in Uruguay after extensive periods playing Major League Rugby (MLR) for the NOLA Gold and Toronto Arrows respectively.

Ignacio Dotti played for NOLA from 2019-2022. The New Orleans team was his foreign club. He joined NOLA from Los Cuervos. He is one half of the regular starting second-row for Uruguay together with Manuel Leindekar. Peñarol compensated in prior SLAR campaigns an Argentine player and with flanker Eric Dosantos playing in the position.

Gastón Mieres is back in Uruguay from the Toronto Arrows. The veteran of Rugby World Cups 2015 and 2019 played a star role for Los Teros in the RWC 2023 qualifiers. Before playing MLR, Mieres also played in England for Coventry and in Italy for Valpolicella.

Mieres’ 80 test caps have come at fullback and on the wing. The 33-year-old and fellow former MLR player, Rodrigo Silva cover both positions. They do so with a young generation coming through. Young talent to have developed since RWC 2019 includes Baltazar Amaya, José Iruleguy and Mateo Viñals.

Dotti is also vastly experienced for Uruguay. The 28-year-old has 58 test caps for Los Teros. While his return from MLR is a boost for Peñarol, it comes with Diego Magno departing or a return to the USA. Magno has signed to play Super Rugby Americas for the American Raptors.
