Americas Matches at Rugby World Cup 2023

Argentina, Chile and Uruguay will represent the Americas at Rugby World Cup 2023. Never before have three South American countries competed at a Rugby World Cup. The historic representation of three South American teams in rugby’s biggest events coincides with no North American involvement. For the first time ever no North American country qualified.

Argentina has competed at every prior Rugby World Cup. As of Rugby World Cup 2023, Argentina will be the only country from the Americas to play at every RWC tournament. The USA did not play at RWC 1995 and will miss RWC 2023. RWC 2023 will be the first Men’s Rugby World Cup without Canada.

Chile is the newcomer; Los Cóndores will make their debut at France 2023. Chile qualified by defeating opponents from South America and North America. Chile and Argentina are both in Group D of RWC 2023. They will square-off on Sunday, October 08 at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes. The match will be the first ever World Cup game between two South American countries.

RWC 2023 is to be Uruguay’s fifth Rugby World Cup. Los Teros debuted at RWC 1999 and also qualified for RWCs 2003, 2015 and 2019. Uruguay has never played against an opponent from the Americas at a Rugby World Cup. This will continue in 2023.

Uruguay will play against France and New Zealand for the first time. Chile will play against England, Japan and Samoa for the first time. In another first, perhaps a Uruguayan will be appointed to referee Los Cóndores vs Los Pumas? A neutral official who is a Spanish-speaker is required.
