USA and Argentina winners on Day One in Hong Kong

The USA and Argentina each came away with a victory in their first games at the Hong Kong Sevens. Uruguay and Canada were on the losing side as the new season of the World Sevens Series officially, and with it Olympic qualification got underway on Friday.

Argentina took on Canada in the second match of the day, with Los Pumas breezing to a 36-nil win. Marcos Moneta scored twice as five difference players touched down against the Canucks.

The Eagles were up next and just squeezed past a challenging Spain side by 15-14. Malacchi Esdale’s try at full-time was enough to secure the win for the inexperienced USA lineup.

Uruguay’s first match as a core team ended with no points scored against South Africa. Los Teros will take solace that it was not a blowout margin against one of the toughest teams on the circuit.

Other results saw Samoa recording a rare shutout of New Zealand, and Great Britain falling by an embarrassing score to France. Last season’s overall champions Australia started their season off with a bang while Fiji also impressed against Japan.
