Argentina Eye World Cup With Changes to Roster for November

Argentina have finalized a 29-man roster for November. The players will train together at a camp in Manchester  on October 24-26. It will include a training regime together with the Sale Sharks.

Michael Cheika’s roster consists of players from the Top 14, Premiership and United Rugby Championship (URC). Many are former Super Rugby players and some are also former Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) players.

Doubts over players have factored in to the selections. Mayco Vivas, Francisco Gómez Kodela, Guido Petti, Rodrigo Bruni, Nicolás Sánchez and Santiago Chocobares miss out through injuries. Joel Sclavi is suspended while Santiago Socino, Santiago Medrano, Santiago Grondona, Joaquín Oviedo and Benjamín Urdapilleta miss out.

The prop selection sees Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro reverting to tight head prop. He played regularly at the position in his younger days but moved to loose head for Los Jaguares and remained there until now. He recently played for Benetton at tight head with Thomas Gallo playing loose head. Rodrigo Martínez is on the roster for the first time under Michael Cheika.

Cheika has recalled Lucas Paulos. He comes in as a change with Guido Petti recovering from injury. As was the case in the Rugby Championship, there are only three specialist second-rowers picked. Confidence in the back-rowers means there are five with a clear eye to the World Cup.

In the backs Benjamin Urdapilleta has made way for the much younger Tomás Albornoz. The halves are otherwise unchanged from how the Rugby Championship concluded. Six wingers have been named. This implies that Lucio Cinti has been selected for center. The uncapped Martín Bogado joins the roster covering fullback.
