Uruguay and Chile have qualified for the Semi Finals of the Men’s draw at the World Rugby Challenger sevens tournament in Santiago. The Americas will not be contesting for the Women’s final, however, with all four entries eliminated.
Los Teros have advanced to the Final Four despite losing two of their three pool matches. They fell to Uganda in the opening round, then after a big win over Lithuania were edged by Germany in the final pool match.
A late try from Marcos Pastore gave Uruguay a stunning victory over Tonga in the Quarter Final. The win sets up a Semi Final rematch with Germany, who remain undefeated after edging Uganda in their knock-out contest.
Chile are now favorites to make the final as they are the only other undefeated side left in the Men’s draw. They defeated a tough Georgian side to start their tournament and then breezed past Papua New Guinea and South Korea to top Pool A.
There was little difficulty getting through the Quarter Final as the Cóndores cruised past Zimbabwe. It’s another rematch in their Semi Final as Georgia stand in their way to a spot in the Cup Final.
Jamaica made little impact in the pool stage with successive defeats to Tonga, Hong Kong, and Zimbabwe. They ended Day Two on a high, however, with a one-point win over Papua New Guinea. The Crocs will now contest the 9th place Final against Lithuania.
Two South American sides made the Quarter Finals in the Women’s draw, but both were defeated in convincing fashion. It was Argentina who emerged as the best-placed Americas side to advance with Chile, Colombia, and Mexico combining for just one win from nine games in the pool stage.
Argentina were soundly beaten by Poland to start their tournament but rebounded with wins over Belgium and Papua New Guinea. They ran into Kenya in the Quarter Final and would fall by four tries to one.
Colombia were competitive in Pool C but ultimately outmatched by Kazakhstan and Japan. Their only win would come against Mexico. Las Serpientes dropped all three pool matches and fell to Chile in the 9th place Semi Final. The latter were also winless in the pool stage.
