Uruguay Look to Japan and Romania With Big Diego Arbelo Blow

Uruguay are a leading player down. Tight head prop Diego Arbelo is out of the tour to Japan in June and the home tests against Romania in July. Arbelo was injured playing for Peñarol against Los Jaguares XV on Tuesday and has since undergone surgery.

Arbelo suffered a ruptured achilles tendon. He did so in a match wherein his impact had boosted the Peñarol scrum tremendously. The injury will see Arbelo playing no further part in the SLAR 2022 campaign and possibly no further rugby all year; he is to begin a six month recovery regime.

Peñarol will look for extra shifts from Ignacio Péculo. The team may also require Juan Echeverría to move from loose head to tight head prop. The same applies to Uruguay. Péculo was the understudy to Arbelo in Uruguay’s most recent test match, a 17-10 loss against Italy in November 2021.

Arbelo’s injury is the second in quick time for Peñarol and Los Teros. Center Felipe Arcos Pérez suffered a broken foot last week playing SLAR. He is being monitored for a possible return in time to tour Japan.
