Peñarol Get Revenge Against Olímpia Lions

Peñarol are flying high. The Uruguayan side were 42-14 winners over the Olímpia Lions on Wednesday evening in Montevideo. Peñarol’s win sees the side get revenge for defeat earlier this season. More importantly, the outcome gives Peñarol maximum competition points to retain top spot in the SLAR 2022 standings.

Despite the big difference in the final score, it was a battle not won until late on in the piece. Peñarol scored three late tries when the Olímpia Lions were down to 13 men. The tries accounted for half of Peñarol’s six tries during he match.

The first try came with a bang. Juan González crossed for the Olímpia Lions in the opening minute of play. The score was unconverted by Sebastián Urbieta.  The score pressured Peñarol to respond. The Uruguayans did so with a try to hooker Guillermo Pujadas. The score was a familiar Peñarol lineout to maul tactic. Felipe Etchaverry converted for a 7-5 lead.

Neither team was able to score another try in the first half; in fact, the Olímpia Lions’ remaining points during the match were all from Urbieta penalties. Urbieta landed two in the first half as did Etcheverry. It put Peñarol ahead 13-11 at the interval.

Urbieta added one second half penalty. The remainder of the points all went to the Uruguayan team. Winger Baltazar Amaya scored  early in the half to give Peñarol some comfort. Pressure then eventually led to a penalty try midway through the half.

The Olímpia Lions were unable to recover. It led to penalties and, ultimately, two late yellow carded. The Numerical disadvantage gave Peñarol an opporthnity to finish on a high and that they did. Peñarol’s three late tries gave them a bonus point win and furthers reason as to why they are the favorites to be crowned SLAR 2022 champions.
