Peñarol Stay On top with home win over Cafeteros Pro

With a home win over Los Cafeteros Pro on Friday evening, Peñarol remain on top of SLAR. In what was a high-scoring entertaining match, Peñarol scored seven tries to claim a bonus point win.

The first try could not have come quicker. Federico Favaro touched down in the opening minute of play for the Uruguayans. Felipe Etcheverry, the player who created the try with a neat kick through, added the conversion.

Los Cafeteros Pro regathered and hit-back with not one but two tries. With a fast-faced and aggressive run down the right side, captain Franco Giudice touched down for the first. It was followed by a Peñarol handling error being punished as Leonardo Get juggled a loose ball to score under the posts. Eliseo Morales converted both to make it a 14-7 lead to the Colombian side.

Etcheverry made it 14-10 before forwards Ignacio Peculo, Santiago Civetta and Manuel Ardao all touched down. The tries came from forward power and retained possession. The trio of tries put Peñarol in complete control with a 36-14 half-time lead.

Outside center Felipe Arcos Pérez added another to open the second half. At which time, Peñarol went to the bench to rotate players. It appeared to have been too early as Boris Wenger and Federico Lavanini powered over for tries.

Peñarol regrouped to cancel out both scores. First, Tomás Inciarte finished off a long-range score. Second, Guillermo Pujadas scored from a lineout to maul move. The highly reliable goal-kicker, Federico Favaro missed both conversions and he had also missed Arcos Pérez’ try. This left him at 0/3 for the night.

Peñarol remain top of SLAR 2022 and can now focus on the Olímpia Lions on Wednesday. Los Cafeteros Pro will take-on os Cobras.
