Impressive Cafeteros Pro upset Olímpia Lions

Los Cafeteros Pro completed an upset win over the Olímpia Lions on Friday. The 16-12 result sees the Colombian side now well clear of Os Cobras and pressing the Olímpia Lions for 4th place in the SLAR 2022 standings.

Having the lead throughout the match, Los Cafeteros Pro were deserved winners. They scored two first half tries without conceding any to hold a 10-0 lead. Potential Pumas loose head Javier Corvalán went into the try zone in the 15th minute while former Argentina u18 hooker Alvaro Llaver scored in the 30th. Both conversion attempts were missed by Julián Hernández.

The second half was a different contest. Los Cafeteros Pro landed a penalty but then lost Corvalán for ten minutes to a yellow card. The Olímpia Lions made the Colombian franchise pay as Mariano Garcete scored to open the Paraguayan team’s account. Sebastián Urbieta converted the score and suddenly it was a 13-7 scoreline after 45 minutes.

A second yellow card to Los Cafeteros Pro further moved the balance of the contest. Felipe Puertas was sent his 10 minute marching orders immediately before Julián Quetzals scored try number two for the Olímpia Lions. The score was unconverted though the match was poised at 13-12 with twenty minutes remaining.

The game was alive with both sides needing to dig deep to pressure the opposition. The opportunity came for the Colombian side with Eliseo Morales accepting his second shot at goal and delivering what was a match-winning strike. His late penalty put Los Cafeteros Pro 16-12 ahead with just over three minutes remaining.

The final result is four competition points for Los Cafeteros Pro and one for the Olímpia Lions. Both teams will now have a little time to regroup ahead of round six of SLAR 2022. Attention turns to Montevideo which will host the second half of the season. It begins on April 23.
