Women’s World Cup to Expand from 12 to 16 Teams for RWC 2025

The Women’s Rugby World Cup will expand from 12 to 16 teams for RWC 2025. The change is the leading component of what will be different for that tournament when compared to RWC 2021 which will be played in 2022 in New Zealand.

The host country of the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup will automatically qualify for the tournament. Additional automatic qualifiers will be the four RWC 2021 semi-finals. This is in contrast to the Men’s Rugby World Cup. In the men’s 12 of 20 teams; namely, the Quarter Finalists and the third placed teams all directly qualify for the next World Cup.

Countries will have the opportunity to qualify for the 2025 Women’s World Cup via regional competitions. As illustrated below they are divided into Africa, Oceania, Pacific Four, Asia, South America, Europe and WXV. Canada and the USA both feature in the Pacific Four.
