Alonso and Sanguinetti added to Uruguay roster in Italy

Two European-based players have joined up with the Uruguayan roster in Italy. Los Teros will play three matches in Italy this month, the first of which will be this coming Saturday against Romania. Juan Manuel Alonso and Mateo Sanguinetti have been added to the roster ahead of the test match against the Eastern Europeans.

Alonso and Sanguinetti play their rugby in France. The remainder of the roster are based in the Americas, predominantly in Uruguay with several playing in Major League Rugby (MLR).

Esteban Meneses’ roster includes ten players from the u23’s, the team that competed as Uruguay ‘A’ in the Americas Pacific Challenge (APC). They are Ignacio Perillo, Mateo Péculo, Guillermo Pujadas, Felipe Aliaga, Juanjuan Garese, Carlos Deus, Juan Tafenaberry, Felipe Arcos Pérez, Baltazar Amaya, and Mateo Viñals.

None of Santiago Arata, Felipe Berchesi, Agustín Ormaechea, Franco Lamanna, or Manuel Leindekar will face Romania. Berchesi is injured while the others are missing due to club commitments. The URU is presently working to secure their involvement for the test match against Italy.

Second-rower Ignacio Dotti is also not involved. The NOLA Gold forward is sitting out the tour through injury. Without him, Lammana and Leindekar Los Teros are very thin in the second-row. Former MLR player Diego Magno is on the roster as are Uruguay ‘A’ players Felipe Aliaga, and Juanjuan Garese.

The tour is Uruguay’s first since qualifying for RWC 2023. Los Teros pushed the Eagles in Colorado and defeated the USA in Montevideo. The combined results saw Uruguay qualifying for France 2023 on aggregate. Meneses will now be able to begin preparations for the World Cup; something that has not happened at the same stage for Uruguay in prior RWCs.
