Chile ‘A’ romp to victory over Paraguay ‘A’

Chile ‘A’ were 62-0 winners this afternoon over Paraguay ‘A’. The battle between the development sides of Chile and Paraguay saw the Andean country running in eight unanswered tries. The match was the opening contest in the 2021 Americas Pacific Challenge. The tournament is being played at the home of Uruguayan rugby, the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo.

Two early tries came from the familiar play of 2021 – the lineout and maul. The five meter attacking lineout was used well by the Chileans with Joaquín Milesi and Diego Escobar. The tries followed an early penalty to see Chile not only on top early but in command.

Diego Warnken extended Chile’s lead with a second penalty. His 27th minute effort was followed by a second try to Escobar ten minutes later. He also landed one more; this time doing so after the half-time siren. The teams left the field for the half time talk with Chile ‘A’ leading 27-0.

Chile A took less than one minute to score again. Cristobal Game touched down in the try zone as the onslaught continued. Subsequent tries were scored by scrumhalf Lukas Carvallo, his replacement Benjamín Videla with 2, and flanker Ernesto Tchimino. Warnken landed all his conversions to finish with 22 points.

The fitness levels between the teams was an element of the match; the impact of Chile’s High Performance Centers were evident. Paraguay was unable to respond to Chile’s points and was being beaten around the park as Chile had the better of Paraguay from one contact area to the next.
