Free Jacks confirm Scott Mathie as new Head Coach

The New England Free Jacks have confirmed Scott Mathie as their new Head Coach for the 2022 Major League Rugby season and beyond. He arrives from South Africa and fills the gap left by Ryan Martin’s departure to the Melbourne Rebels after one season in charge.

Mathie is a former scrumhalf who comes highly rated as an attack and skills specialist. The 38-year-old enjoyed a decade-long run as a professional player including four seasons in England before retiring in 2013. In his first Currie Cup as Head Coach he led Griquas to a third place finish in 2021, which included upset wins over traditional powerhouses Western Province and the Free State.

Also confirmed is Mathie’s senior Assistant Coach. Mike Rogers comes via New Zealand where he was scrum coach for the Bay of Plenty Steamers before becoming an assistant for the Chiefs Women’s side. He will be tasked with overseeing both the forwards and defense.
