Pathway for Peru players in 2022 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby

There is a pathway for Peru to have players involved in the 2022 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). South America’s regional high performance manager, and former head coach of Los Pumas Daniel Hourcade notes that efforts are underway to exposure Peruvians to SLAR.

“It is something that has some up from one year to the next. We are having talks with Peru Rugby together with Martín Bassino (Sudamérica Rugby Training and Education Manager) to support Peruvian rugby in terms of coaches and staff so that two or three players may potentially feature in preseason for a franchise.”

SLAR has had two seasons of competition. The initial season was ended early in 2020. The 2021 season was a complete season. It contains six franchises, one from each of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. There are expansion plans to add additional teams from existing country members.

Peru was a regular opponent of Brazil and Colombia in previous decades; however, progress has seen changes. Brazil joined he Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) in 2016 while Colombia competed in the Americas Rugby Challenge (ARCh). Both teams demonstrated progress on the field and both now have exported players to professional leagues abroad.

Peru is ranked 16th in the Americas Rankings. Colombia and Brazil hold 7th and 5th respectively. Chile is between them in 6th position. Chile and Uruguay will represent South America in the upcoming RWC 2023 qualifiers involving North and South American teams.
