Germán Kessler signs for Provence Rugby

Germán Kessler has signed for Provence Rugby. In doing so, the Uruguayan will remain in France and in the Pro D2. He makes the move south from Charente to the Mediterranean club.

Kessler joined Charente for the 2019-2020 season. Two years he will play for his second French club and third professional club overall. The hooker departed Uruguay in 2019 to play Major League Rugby (MLR) for the Utah Warriors.

The 27-year-old has 53 caps for Uruguay. He played in RWCs 2015, and 2019, scoring a try against Wales in Kumamoto. He has appeared in RWC highlight reels for his pass off the deck to Santiago Arata in his try against Fiji in Kamaishi.

Uruguay will compete in RWC 2023 qualifiers in July. Peñarol players have assembled in Montevideo to begin the preparations. They will be subsequently joined by players based abroad including Kessler.

Kessler is one of two Uruguayans in the Pro D2. The other is his RWC 2019 teammate Manuel Leindekar who plays for Oyonnax. Additional RWC Teros competing in France are Felipe Berchesi (Dax), Agustín Ormaechea (Nice) and Santiago Arata (Castres).

Kessler has 14 tries to his name, making him the third highest try-scorer from a front-rower in the history of test match rugby. He is behind retired Irish hooker Keith Wood (15), and current USA hooker Joe Taufete’e (20).
