Jaguares XV win big against Cafeteros Pro

Los Jaguares XV completed a big win this evening. Argentina’s Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) entrant defeated Los Cafeteros Pro 71-28. The match was the first for the Argentine franchise and the second for the team from Colombia.

It was an eleven tries to four performance. Los Jaguares played so well in the early goings that they had the bonus point secured after 18 minutes of play. The Argentine side ran in seven tries in total in the opening half. There were some impressive scores as backs and forwards ran with ease through Cafeteros Pro’s mid-field defense.

When Cafeteros had the ball they looked reasonably good. Errors cost them several times in the opening half. Los Jaguares XV were glad to hammer home the errors by scoring from them from long-range.  Indeed, Jaguares XV tries were scored from virtually all areas of the field.

Nine Jaguares players in total scored tries. Of them center Tomás Cubilla and winger Sebastián Cancelliere scored doubles. The opening try went to No8 Joaquín Oviedo. He demonstrated why Mario Ledesma selected him to tour with Los Pumas for the 2020 Tri Nations. In addition to scoring, Oviedo had a strong performance; his ball-carrying involved repeated line-breaks.

Los Cafeteros Pro scored their opening try late in the first half. It was scored by winger Alejandro Navarro. He provided a support line for Nicolás Roger. The Argentine fly half had made a break down the touch line. Navarro added a second try after half time.

The second half was again won by Los Jaguares. The Argentine side scored four tries; two more than the Colombian team. However, the two final tries were scored by Cafeteros Pro. One saw prop Diego Posada barging over from close range. The other saw the impressive Gonzalo García scoring while playing out of position.

Los Jaguares XV demonstrated why they are favorites to win the tournament. It will take something quite special to stop them. Meanwhile, Cafeteros Pro showed how much Colombia is interested in developing from the SLAR. The players never put their heads down and were ultimately rewarded with a bonus point on full-time.

Both teams will play again on Thursday. In round three of SLAR, Los Cafeteros Pro take on Peñarol while Los Jaguares XV face Selknam. Both Peñarol and Selknam are unbeaten after two rounds.
