Austin signs Premiership veteran Sebastian de Chaves

The Austin Gilgronis have added size and experience to their second row stocks with the signing of second row Sebastian de Chaves. Standing 6’7″ (2.02m) and with a decade of professional experience, the 30-year-old arrives in Major League Rugby directly from London Irish and the English Premiership.

de Chaves is originally from South Africa and represented his home country at the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina. After starting his career with the Golden Lions, he moved to Europe in 2012 to play for Mont-de-Marsan in the French Top 14.

In 2013 he landed in the Premiership with Leicester Tigers and spent three seasons at Welford Road, switching to London Irish in 2016. Newcastle Falcons came calling in 2019 but de Chaves returned to the Exiles on a short-term deal in August, playing eight matches before the season’s end in October.

Austin now have three locks signed up including former GCU captain Cam Dodson, who also covers No8, and USA Selects rep Christian Ostberg. Still to be officially confirmed is Canadian international Reegan O’Gorman, who will give the team four strong options in the engine room for the 2021 season.
