Memorable Americas Tries – Phil MacKenzie vs Tonga 2011

With six minutes remaining, Phil MacKenzie scored for Canada to put them in the lead against Tonga. The game was none other than a RWC match and Canada were 25-20 winners thanks to MacKenzie’s score.

The match was Canada’s opening fixture of RWC 2011. Played in Whangarei, New Zealand, the Maple Leafs started well. Their 10-0 lead did not last, however, as a double from Siale Piutau and goal-kicking from Kurt Morath put Tonga 20-13 ahead.

The result was deemed an upset. Indeed Tonga opened RWC 2011 against New Zealand and claimed wins against Japan and France in the tournament. In losing against Canada, Tonga missed out on a first-ever appearance in the Quarter Finals.
