Memorable Americas Tries – Winston Stanley vs England 1999

Canada’s RWC 1999 warm-ups saw the North Americans playing away against England at London’s Twickenham Stadium. The match was won 36-11 by the home side, though it saw a memorable try scored by Winston Stanley.

The Canadians right winger somehow found a way to get the ball down in the right corner. He did so by chasing a kick, gathering and getting it down despite England center Jeremy Guscott being all over him.

Stanley played a total of 66 test matches for Canada. Nine of these were Rugby World Cup matches. He played in RWCs 1995, 1999 and 2003. He scored three tries at RWCs, two of which were against Namibia  at Toulouse in RWC 1999.

Stanley is Canada’s second highest try scorer of all-time. He scored 24 tries which was a record until DTH van der Merwe passed the mark. van der Merwe retired from international duty following RWC 2019 with 38 test tries tries.
