Season over for Utah flanker Lance Williams

The Utah Warriors have been rocked by injury before the season has even begun. Star flanker Lance Williams confirmed on social media that he has torn his left anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the Major League Rugby campaign in its entirety.

It’s a cruel blow for the 26-year-old who many – ARN included – had tipped to push for representative honors in 2020. Williams will instead have months of rehabilitation ahead to prepare for a return in 2021.

Early injuries to key players has been a recurring theme for the Warriors. They lost both Josh Whippy and Jackson Kaka to serious injuries in the 2018 preseason while Jared Whippy missed the entirety of 2019. Alex Tucci is currently sidelined but could make a return to the pitch in the second half of 2020.

The team has promoted Fijian lock Puna Vuli and teenage loose forward Charlie Hola to the senior squad for Sunday’s season opener against Rugby ATL in Marietta. Junior All-American captain Bailey Wilson takes the place of Williams in the starting back row.
