Wallabies To Play First Match in Buenos Aires in 18 Years

The home venue of Los Jaguares, Vélez Sarsfield is a regular home of international rugby. Los Pumas tend to play one match per year at the venue, although in 2020 it will be against a familiar, yet fresh, opponent.

The Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR) has changed around home fixtures for the 2020 Rugby Championship. First up for Los Pumas will be South Africa. The world champion Springboks are to face Argentina in San Juan, a venue with no prior matches in the Rugby Championship.

Following the match at the Estadio Bicentenario in San Juan, Los Pumas will embark on a tour to New Zealand and Australia. The South Americans will then host the same teams for the fifth and sixth rounds of the Rugby Championship.

The fifth round match is to be against New Zealand at the Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza. It marks the first ever match for the All Blacks in the city and is also the first time that New Zealand does not play a test Argentina inside Buenos Aires province.

The decision to not face New Zealand in the capital sees another team doing so instead as the Wallabies are to play their first match in Buenos Aires in 18 years. Vélez Sarsfield hosted test matches between Argentina and Australia in 1987, including a famous win, wherein Cristian Mendy scored in a 27-19 victory.
