Jesse Kriel out, Damian Willemse in for Springboks

South Africa have been forced to make a second change to their Rugby World Cup squad. Outside center Jesse Kriel has been ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury suffered against New Zealand in the opening weekend. He is replaced by the versatile Damian Willemse, who arrives from England.

The Springboks had already called up prop Thomas du Toit in place of Trevor Nyakane. Kriel’s injury was considered less severe but the decision has now been made to make the change with his participation in the final two pool matches in doubt.

Willemse was considered unlucky to miss out on initial selection due to injury. The flyhalf or fullback had recently signed on as World Cup cover with Saracens but his stay in the English Premiership has been cut short. The 21-year-old has won 5 test caps, the most recent against Wales in November 2018.
