Namibia defeat Sharks XV as Davies trims squad

Namibia coach Phil Davies has reduced his Rugby World Cup training squad to 38, ending a week-long training camp in Durban with an exhibition match against a Sharks XV on Saturday. The Namibians emerged in the winning end of a 43-0 score, a pleasing result for Davies against a team comprised of those outside the senior Currie Cup group.

Of those left out of the group, the most notable cuts are experienced hooker Niel van Nuuren, second row Mahepisa Tjeriko, and RWC 2015 veteran Russell van Wyk. There are no inclusions from outside the original list of 50. Welwitschias No8 Thomas Kali had joined the group but did not survive the cut.

The team will now return to home base in Windhoek to prepare for their final warm-up matches against the Southern Kings, the first at Hage Geingob Stadium on August 31 and the second at Walvis Bay on September 7. Final World Cup selection will take place following the first, with the traveling team to be announced on September 2.

Namibia will compete in Pool B along with New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, and Canada. They will face the North Americans in their final match on October 13 at Kamaishi.

A detailed squad list can be seen here.
