RWC Rewind Uruguay: Ormaechea vs Fiji 2015

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. First up as the feature Team of the Week is Uruguay.

In day six of the series the feature is Agustín Ormaechea’s try against Fiji from RWC 2015. In scoring the try Agustín Ormaechea followed in the footsteps of his father, Diego Ormaechea who scored in RWC 1999 against Spain.

Agustín Ormaechea would start in all four of Uruguay’s matches at RWC 2015. This would see him facing both Wales, and England on their respective home soil. It also saw matches against Australia, and Fiji. This highly demanding pool was one that few would wish upon their enemy yet Uruguay were happy to be back playing at a RWC.

It was against Fiji in which Uruguay played their best rugby. Los Teros would score two tries, the first of which was by hooker Carlos Arboleya. Try number two followed quickly, and with it those in attendance rose to their feet in delight.

Ormaechea’s try came from pressure from Los Teros which thy turned into a memorable five points. The pressure saw Ben Volavola throwing a loose pass from which Rodrigo Silva kicked forward only for the bounce to not sit up for him. Gastón Mieres was on hand to pick it up and off-load to Arboleya who fed it back to Silva.

Having been tackled four meters out Silva set-up the ball with support from Andrés Vilaseca. Ormaechea then darted down the short side to dive over for the try. The scrum-half would subsequently line-up the conversion. His strike would swing in nicely but hit the cross bar.
