Canada slip away from Portugal

In their second match of the World Rugby u20 Trophy, Canada slipped away from Portugal, losing 49-21 on Saturday. Having also lost against Tonga first up Canada are now to prepare for their final pool fixture against Hong Kong, looking to avoid finishing bottom of the group.

Portugal scored the win by running in 22 points in the final quarter. It had been 27-21 to the Portuguese at that stage and Canada were in with a shot of victory.

Leading the charge for Portugal was fly half Jerónimo Portela with 19 points. He and winger Raffaele Storti impressed with the latter scoring two tries in addition to assisting in one other.

Portugal opened the scoring with a penalty yet the early upper-hand would go to Canada. Scoring a brilliant try was scrum half and captain Will Percillier. The early advantage would set-up what was an intensive opening half of rugby.

Portugal responded with two quick tries to Storti and Manuel Pinto to which Canada would then respond themselves with loose head Stefan Zuliani powering over. With all conversions on target Portugal went into half-time leading 17-14.

Portal began the second half with a penalty before Storti crossed for his second try. The Canadians would hit-back on the hour mark by scoring their third, and final try. Portugal then took control, running in three tries to complete a comprehensive victory.
