Jamaica and Mexico headed to Olympic Repechage

Jamaica and Mexico will each send two teams to the Olympic Repechage Qualifier tournament in 2020. Mexico were crowned champions in the women’s competition at the Rugby Americas North Sevens in George Town, with their men finishing in third place. Jamaica were runners-up in each draw.

While slightly overshadowed by Canada’s win in the Men’s draw that brought with it a spot at Tokyo 2020, the opportunity remains significant for each. The Repechage typically features those at the lower end of core status on the HSBC Sevens Series with a host of other Tier 2 and 3 nations involved.

It was an impressive turnaround for Las Serpientes, who were beaten by Jamaica in the final stage of the round-robin before recovering from a  10-7 halftime deficit to claim a 19-15 win over the Lady Crocs in the final. St. Lucia shut out Trinidad & Tobago to claim third place but missed out on the Repechage ticket.

The Jamaican men survived a scare from Barbados in the Quarter Finals before defeating Mexico in the Semi Finals. Canada proved a class above in the Cup Final, but the second place finish earned them a spot in next year’s qualifier. Mexico took theirs by cruising past Bermuda in the 3rd Place Final.
