Strong Day One in Caymans sees Canada on track for Tokyo

A strong day one performance in the Cayman Islands sees Canada marching towards qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Played in the summer sun at the Truman Bodden National Sports Complex in Georgetown, Cayman Islands there were twenty-one matches on Day One.

In the Men’s competition Canada and Jamaica impressed to top the respective pools. Canada won all matches with ease, doing so on an aggregate of 151-5. The next best in their group was Mexico who defeated Bermuda, and Barbados.

Pool B saw Jamaica dominating, albeit to a less extent than that of the Canadians. Jamaica, nonetheless, were far to good for all opponents as they went 111-12 on aggregate. Finishing in second spot to the Crocs on Day One was Trinidad & Tobago who saw off both home side the Cayman Islands, and Guyana.

The Women’s competition is played in a round-robin format. On day one Jamaica impressed to win all three matches. The next best was Mexico with two wins followed by Trinidad & Tobago with one win, one draw, and one defeat.

The Women’s section does not count towards places at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. World Rugby changed the process to take-away the automatic spot for the Women’s winner after both Canada, and the USA qualified via the HSBS Sevens Series.

It was surrounded by controversy after both Australia, and New Zealand also qualified though World Rugby retained an automatic qualifying spot for an Oceania qualifier.

What this means is that the Women’s teams in Georgetown are instead competing for places in the Repechage tournament. With six teams entered, the top two finishers will head to the last-gasp knock-out that will take place in 2020.

Day two will se an additional twenty matches being played. To watch the RAN Sevens live access the official RAN Facebook and Youtube social media outlets.
