Chile into Hong Kong Qualifier Semi Finals

Uruguay’s tournament has come to a close, but the Americas still have one hopeful in the Semi Finals of the Hong Kong Core Qualifiers. Chile have defeated Tonga to book their place opposite Tonga with a spot in the final on the line.

It wasn’t smooth sailing for the Cóndores on the second day of the competition. Their final pool match resulted in a 19-7 defeat to Germany. Francisco Metuaze scored a first-half try but Chile could not close the gap in the second half.

The Quarter Final against Tonga started well as Julio Blanc and Rodrigo Fernández scored first half tries. A second from Blanc proved to be the winner as Tonga scored twice in the second half, including one at full-time that proved too little, too late.

Los Teros started the day well with a dominant 38-12 win over Jamaica in their final pool match. Tomás Etcheverry and Joaquín Alonso each scored twice with Omar Dixon and Mikel Facey picking up the tries for the Crocs.

It was a fight in the Quarter final as they went to halftime in a scoreless tie with Germany. Alonso’s 12th minute try, converted by Felipe Etcheverry, gave the team a two-point lead but they could not hold on as Tim Lichtenberg scored in stoppage time to give the Germans the victory.

Chile will play against Hong Kong in the second Semi Final, the first will be contested by Germany and Ireland. Hong Kong defeated Tonga and the Philippines on their second day while Ireland routed Russia in back-to-back matches to emerge as tournament favorites.
