SaberCats sign Irish prop Charlie Connolly

The Houston SaberCats have signed tighthead prop Charlie Connolly for the 2019 Major League Rugby season. At just 21 he arrives from Ireland by way of North Wales where he has most recently been playing for RGC 1404 in the Welsh Principality.

Connolly was first choice No3 for the Ireland u20 side in the 2017 u20 Six Nations and started three games at the World Cup Rugby Championship. He then spent four months with Mogliano in the Italian Eccellenza before moving to Wales.

At 1.79m (5’10”) Connolly is on the shorter side for a tighthead but his leverage has proved useful in the scrum, and he is surprisingly agile in the loose. He is a direct replacement for incumbent Adam Macklin who has retired in the off-season.

Codi Jones has recovered from a long-term knee injury that ruled him out of the 2018 regular season to compete for the No3 shirt at Houston. Eagles starter Paul Mullen could also make a swift return after being released from his contract at Newcastle Falcons.
