USA South Panthers Win RAN Championship

The USA South Panthers are the 2018 RAN Championship winners. The Panthers claimed the crown by downing the Cayman Islands 42-14 on Saturday.

The match was the 6th overall between the USA South Panthers and the Cayman Islands. The Panthers’ victory sees them holding an overall record of 4 wins and 2 losses against the Cayman Islands.

Played in Atlanta, Georgia, the fixture was not supposed to be a tournament decider but it turned out to be following the withdraw of Trinidad & Tobago. There was to be a match on June 23 between the Cayman Islands and Trinidad & Tobago only for the latter to pull out.

Rescheduling the fixture proved to be impossible which meant that the USA South Panthers vs Cayman Islands fixture became the title determining match. RAN determined that the prior matches involving Trinidad & Tobago were to be removed from the 2018 RAN Men’s Championship.

Prior to Saturday’s match the USA South Panthers had been beaten 34-33 by Trinidad & Tobago while Trinidad & Tobago had also claimed a 27-24 win over Bermuda.

Further Ran Championship fixtures saw Bermuda defeated 48-28 by the USA South Panthers and 20-19 against the Cayman Islands.

2018 saw two divisions played below the RAN Championship – the RAN Cup and the RAN Trophy. These titles were won by Jamaica and Guadeloupe respectively.
