Utah Warriors to play opening matches in Rio Tinto Stadium

The Utah Warriors have announced a venue change for their first two matches of their inaugural Major League Rugby preseason schedule. Originally set to take place at Zions Bank Stadium, the matches against the Glendale Raptors on Saturday, March 31 and the Ontario Arrows on Friday, April 6 will now be played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Construction is still ongoing at the new Zions Bank Stadium site hence the change. It’s anticipated the match against the Prairie Wolf Pack on April 20 will be the first played at the new facility in Herriman.

Rio Tinto Stadium is a significant upgrade in terms of capacity from Zions Bank Stadium. The home of Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake, Rio Rinto Stadium has a capacity of 20,213, roughly four times that of Zions Bank Stadium.

At 10 years old the Stadium features modern a modern design including a Kentucky bluegrass surface and has been used several times for rugby in the past. In May 2014 the Collegiate Rugby Championship final was played there between Brigham Young and UCal Berkeley.

Tickets for the matches at Rio Tinto Stadium are now available for purchase online.
