Moyse and Stones representing Canada in Pyeongchang

Rugby may not be part of the Winter Olympics, but that hasn’t stopped two Canadian international players from representing their country in Pyeongchang. World Rugby Hall of Fame inductee Heather Moyse and former Canada u20 starter Cameron Stones are both part of the Canadian bobsleigh team in South Korea.

It’s the third trip to the Olympic Games for Moyse. The Summerside, PEI, native won gold at both the 2010 Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Games in Sochi alongside teammate Kaillie Humphries. Moyse, 39, announced her return to the bobsleigh in late 2017 after a three-year absence. She finished in sixth place on Wednesday with new partner Alysia Rissling.

This is the first Olympic Games for Stones. The 26-year-old was an imposing loose forward for the McMaster Marauders and played in two IRB Junior World Trophy competitions. He was part of the Ontario Blues program before leaving the sport due to a shoulder injury, instead switching his focus to the bobsleigh. He will compete in the 4-man event beginning on February 24.

Moyse and Stones aren’t the only members of the team with rugby connections. Mirela Rahneva played for Guelph University and briefly trained with the national sevens team. She finished in 12th place in the Women’s Skeleton event last week. Men’s Skeleton athlete Dave Greszczyszyn played rugby for Brock University. He finished his event in 21st spot.

Paul Webster is the Canadian Curling Team Leader in Pyeongchang. The 42-year-old coach saw his Mixed Doubles team win Gold on February 13. Webster was a four-year member of the rugby team while at Wilfrid Laurier University.
