Paddy Ryan called up to Eagles squad

Newcastle Falcons prop Paddy Ryan has been called up by the Eagles ahead of their match against Ireland on Saturday. The uncapped 26-year-old tighthead specialist joins the squad as an injury replacement for Titi Lamositele.

The specifics of Lamositele’s injury have not been revealed but if speculation that he will miss the entirety of the test series is correct it would be a significant blow to the Eagles pack. Ryan is not exactly a like-for-like replacement as Lamositele had been due to start at loosehead, and Anthony Purpura now looks likely to wear the No 1 shirt with Ben Tarr as backup. The other props in the squad, Chris Baumann and Dino Waldren, are both tighthead specialists.

Ryan has previously represented Ireland at u20 level having been raised there but qualifies for the Eagles by virtue of being born in Chicago. The Munster product moved first to France with Libourne and then to the Aviva Premiership with Newcastle in 2015 where he since remained. Injuries curtailed his involvement this past season to just a handful of senior appearances. Ryan joins Newcastle clubmate Nick Civetta on the Eagles roster.
