Chile into Qualifying Semi Finals in Hong Kong

Chile’s perfect run in Hong Kong continued on Day Two as they crushed Hong Kong and cruised past South American rivals Uruguay in the Quarter Finals to book their place against a tough German side in the Semi Finals of the Qualifying bracket of the Hong Kong 7s. The Cóndores now sit just two wins away from earning core status for the 2017-18 HSBC Sevens Series, something they have never achieved before.

What promised to be a hotly contested match against Hong Kong in the final round of the pool stages was instead a blowout win for Chile as they throttled Hong Kong by 31-0 much to the dismay of the home crowd. A pair of tries to Julio Blanc and singles for Francisco Metuaze, Marcelo Torrealba, and Lucas Westcott accounted for the five tries to none result.

Earlier in the day Uruguay dispatched Guyana with ease, winning 50-14 in their final pool match to earn a Quarter Final spot. Federico Favaro and Mateo Tortorella contributed two tries apiece with Gastón Gibernau, Juan Larrosa, Francisco Berchesi, and Eugenio Plottier scoring one try each.

The Quarter Final was still in the balance at halftime with Rodrigo Fernández opening the scoring for Chile and Gibernau replying for the Teros. It was the Condores who pulled away in the second half, leaving their mark through Francisco Neira and Westcott. With time expired Ignacio García grabbed a consolation score for Uruguay but it was too late.

Germany won both their matches but did not look as sharp as they did on Day One, struggling to get past a resurgent Tongan team by 24-21. Hong Kong restored some credit in the Quarter Final but ultimately the Germans came away 14-7 winners.

The other Semi Final will be a rematch between Olympic qualifiers Spain and upstarts Papua New Guinea. Spain smashed Namibia by 33-0 in the Quarter Final while PNG just scraped past Uganda by 14-10. While the result is not a foregone conclusion, PNG will have their work cut out for them after dropping their final pool match to Spain by 15-0.

Both Guyana and Jamaica bowed out early after neither could find a win in the pool stages. Ronald Mayers and Patrick King scored tries for Guyana against Uruguay but the defense conceded eight tries to the South Americans. Jamaica managed a single try from Anthony Bingham in their 26-5 loss to Uganda in the final act of their tournament.

All matches are streamed live by World Rugby.
