Memorable Americas Tries – Agustín Ormaechea vs Romania 2018

In their final tour match before RWC 2019, Uruguay faced Romania at the Ghencea Sports Complex in Bucharest. It was a match of contrasting teams in terms of management. On the one hand, the visitors had developed tremendously since the previous RWC. On the other hand, the home side had been disqualified for having breached player eligibility rules in their qualifying campaign.

Uruguay had a roster made up entirely of homegrown players. This added to the significance of Los Teros’ story which culminated in their victory over Fiji in Kamaishi, Japan in their opening match of RWC 2019.

Like the game in Kamaishi, the 2018 clash in Bucharest was a close contest. So much so, that Romania and Uruguay were locked into a 20-20 scoreline with time up; though there would be a winner. The crucial play saw Agustín Ormaechea scoring an intercept try to seal a win for the South Americans.

The score appeared to be impossible. Romania were in control of possession and had put together 28 phases of play. Ultimately, Ormaechea latched on to a pass from fly half Daniel Plai to run 70 metres to score the memorable try and win the match for Los Teros.
