Germán Kessler signs long-term extension with Charente

Germán Kessler will be staying in France for the foreseeable future. Uruguay’s first choice hooker has signed a two-year contract extension with SA XV Charente that will see him through at least the 2021-2022 season. The deal also includes an option for a third year.

The 25-year-old signed for the Pro D2 club in December on the back of his outstanding performances at Rugby World Cup 2019. After scoring a try on debut against Perpignan in January, Kessler played in three matches before play was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charente is Kessler’s first professional outfit. He was due to play for the Utah Warriors of Major League Rugby in 2019 but visa delays prevented his arrival before the season ended. At international level the Montevideo native from the Los Cuervos club has won 53 caps since debuting in 2015.

Kessler should play an leading role with Charente next season as 36-year-old Samoa international Ole Avei winds down his career. The club is in 7th spot on the Pro D2 ladder in just their fourth season of full professionalism after winning promotion from Fédérale 1 in 2016.
