South Africa To Play in Red in Salta

South Africa is to play in a red strip in Salta. The new-look uniform will be used for the Springboks’ away test match in the Rugby Championship against Argentina. The decision came from SA Rugby who are looking to mark 25 years of rugby unity in South Africa.

The use of red completes a “jigsaw puzzle” of the Springboks playing and training in apparel that was prepared for use in 2017. The colors of the flag – green, yellow, blue and red, as well as black and white – have all featured in training or playing apparel this year.

Rugby unity was achieved on 20 March 1992 following covert negotiations between the old South African Rugby Board (SARB) and the banned ANC from 1988 onward.

SARB and the non-racial South African Rugby Union, the South African Rugby Football Federation and the South African Rugby Association came together in 1992 to form the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) under the joint presidency of Ebrahim Patel (SARU) and Danie Craven (SARB). SARFU’s name was changed to SARU in 2003.

The match in Salta will be a second round fixture of the Rugby Championship. It is to be the third time in which the teams have played in the northern Argentine city. The past results are split at 1-1. Before then though, the teams will face-off in Port Elizabeth. That fixture, to be played on August 19, will be the first of the tournament for both countries this year.
