England coast to win over USA

The USA dropped a one-sided 39-13 result to England in the final game of the 2016 Women’s Rugby Super Series at the Regional Athletic Center on Saturday. A hat-trick to winger Lydia Thompson was the root of many woes suffered by the hosts on the way to a third defeat in three matches during the tournament.

Thompson’s first came just four minutes into the match after some very tidy phase play from the World Cup champions. The ease at which England worked through their patterns was worrying from an American standpoint.

The second try was just as methodical, only this time through the forwards. Amy Cokayne connected with Alex Matthews at a lineout just six meters out and the pack did the rest. The rolling maul was like clockwork, with Cokayne the lucky recipient of the try.

Kimber Rozier sent over a penalty goal to put the USA on the board, but Thompson skated over for her second before the whistle signaled halftime.

Matthews got in on the act just a couple minutes after the break as she bulldozed around the corner off a lineout. Rozier notched her second penalty goal but replacement Millie Wood raced away for England’s fifth try of the afternoon to pile on the misery.

A second to Matthews from a maul was followed by a magnificent solo effort from Thompson. She completed her hat trick by taking the corner, fending off two tacklers, and showing the cover a clean pair of heels en route to a 60 meter score to wrap up a glory day for England.

Alycia Washington managed to dig out a try for the USA before full-time but it was consolation at best as England were home and dry with room to spare. The women’s Eagles will now have a few weeks off to regroup and prepare for a fall tour with much work to be done by interim head coach Peter Baggetta, standing in for Pete Steinberg until the end of the year.
