Magie joins Eagles in Ireland, Hattingh cited for foul play

Will Magie has joined the US Eagles camp ahead of Saturday’s test against Ireland in Dublin. The 29-year-old flyhalf or fullback replaces Will Hooley in the squad. Hooley was a late withdrawal from the lineup against England after failing a head injury assessment.

A member of the 2019 World Cup roster, Magie was due to miss the July tests after suffering a hamstring injury while playing for the Austin Gilgronis against the Utah Warriors in late May. He has recovered sufficiently to join the team and could be in line to win his 27th cap.

Ireland have seen three experienced players withdraw from training this week. Flanker Peter O’Mahony has been granted an early release to begin his off-season recovery, while midfielder Chris Farrell and outside back Jordan Larmour are ruled out with head and groin injuries respectively.

Meanwhile USA back row Riekert Hattingh will stand in front of a judiciary on Tuesday after being cited for foul play in Sunday’s game. Wearing the No7 shirt in his test debut, Hattingh collided with Freddie Steward in mid-air sending the England fullback flying. The referee decided there was no act of foul play but the citing commissioner has evidently seen things differently.
